Good morning, Monsters,

The kobolds of level 8 are getting quite excited about Viva La Dungeon returning to their level. They’re apparently building a small town among the enormous piles of gold that make up OSAID’s (Oh Shit It’s a Dragon)’s hoard. I’m being told the name of the town will be decided by vote in June. Then OSAID will return in July, and the new season of Viva will begin!

Also friendly reminder, the archivists of level 4 will never reach out to you personally for your story. If a small spider tells you that your story is required, do not follow it to a second location. If a small spider tell you that your story is required, do not follow it to a second location. There, I felt it was important enough to repeat.

May this present moment be peaceful and warm,

Viva La Dungeon!

The Viva Journal

Classic-ish Viva Tonight!

In the molting of last year, I was granted perspective shifts in many areas of my life including the current state of Viva La Dungeon. I see a crazy cool future, but I also was frankly blessed with the clarity to see the real core Viva boardgame I’ve been making the last 6 years.

It was in a fit of inspired passion I dug into everything that Viva has become over the last 6 years and started ripping guts out. So many game decisions were made over the years due to circumstances, and then those compound to become almost foundational laws of the game. It’s kind of exhilarating though to confidently rip out something you had previously considered a critical part of your game.

Long story short, we will be introducing the world to Classic Viva La Dungeon at IRL conventions and events starting this coming weekend AND we’ll be playing it tonight as a break from Season 15.

What is Classic Viva La Dungeon?

Classic VLD is the boardgame experience I set out to build 6 years ago.

I wanted a dungeon-crawling battle-royale that combined the fun dice-rolling of classic games like Dungeon! with modern battle-royale video games like Fortnite or Apex Legends. (What I didn’t realize is that it’s also a love letter to the d20, but that’s another discussion.)

OK LICH WTF IS CLASSIC THEN?

Classic Viva drops all Shadow/Hidden Identity mechanics. In Classic Viva, everyone is visible from turn 1. The cubes come in and will eventually leave only 1 safe room but the game could end well before that. There are no zombies. There are new actions, new magic items, and armor!

Classic Viva is the brutal competition that I envisioned at the start. It’s not going to be for everyone. I’m a boardgame geek and I know people’s feeling on dice. To be honest I really love Euro games so I have no idea truly why Viva other than - because I must. This version of Viva is for the people who still love playing TTRPGS that can kill their characters on the whim of the die.

The game show version of Viva is going in a different direction. It’s moving forward. I’ll be explaining more of that that means as we head towards next season but in simple terms, Viva will evolve in an Adventure game with a PVP end…and won’t stop there.

Anyway we’ll be playing it tonight!

We’ll be back next week on the Bump with the background on our final character of Season 15, Monster.exe….once known as the hacker SilvrKat.

Hope to see you tonight at 9pm EST on Twitch.tv/theLichingHour for some Viva!
